Myrmecia pyriformis queen ant.
These beautiful ants are also known as bull ants. They are they second biggest ant in Australia, with the queen coming in at 30mm. They are very aggressive and have the worst sting of any ant in Australia.
The eyesight of these ants is incredible - they will often follow you across the room.
We do not recommend Myrmecia species for kids starting out with ant keeping due to their powerful sting and slow development from eggs to workers. Patience and cautiousness are required during their care. This is especially the case during feedings and during the cleaning of their outworlds.
Myrmecia are a semi claustral ant and queens need regular feeding whilst raising their first workers. During this time our queens enjoy raw honey, maple syrup, fruits and protein by way of cricket legs. Due to their size and aggression, we highly recommend the use of a test tube and outworld combination from the outset. This allows ease of feeding, cleanup and also a protected area for the queen to care for her brood.
